The Mommy Myth : The Idealization of Motherhood and How It Has Undermined Women by Susan Douglas & Meredith Michaels

Has everyone who wants to participate got there hands on a copy yet? What do you think so far? Anyone finished already? Hate it? Love it? Undecided? Is there anything you read in the book you really want to talk about here?

I read a couple chapters but had to return it to the library because I forgot to renew it & it was overdue. I'm gonna pay my fine & check it out again by monday hopefully.

Also the paprback edition is avaible for pre-order now. If you all want, we could stop discussion of this book and bump the topic when the paper back is for sale. and instead read the other one we talked about reading together first.

I finished reading it, but I am on vacation, so I don't have much time to talk. I will be back on Thursday.

I'm going to pick up a copy so that I can join in on this discussion, if that is okay with everyone?

Oh, I didn't know we were going to discuss this! I'm a little more than halfway through it, I've been reading it for an hour on my lunch break. I *love* this book! It's such an important read. I'm on the War on Welfare Mothers chapter.

My library had 4 copies - all that have been taken out for the past month and a half - and had just been returned. So I rushed and put a hold on it, and just started reading it last night.

I'm going to focus just on Mommy Myth for now. For the last week I've been juggling White Oleander, Beyond Guns & Dolls, Catfight, What About Us - Mothers Feminism Forgot, and .. well.. Archie comics. I'm dropping all those books now to focus on Mommy Myth because if I Read any more, my brain will fry. So far it looks like it's going to be an interesting read, will update more when I get further into it or run into a spot I want to discuss.

If your library doesn't have it, ask if they can order it, most libraries will.

Haven't finished it but I have some real problems with its tone in places.  I guess I don't think their trashing of attachment parenting is on very solid foundation.  For sure, not everyone has the wearwithal to do that style of parenting, but to just out of hand pour contempt on it is unsound scholarship.  They do the same with Mary Eberstadt's Home Alone -- and while I don't agree with everything Eberstadt wrote, it isn't a book just setting out to make working mothers feel guilty.  Eberstadt raises really valid points, I think.  I remember this when before I became a mom.  I thought everyone and the media were out to make me a bad mother if I didn't stay home with the kids and after I had them, I thought everyone was pushing me to go out and work and 'achieve' for my own fulfillment.  There's a lot of pressure from both sides and you tend to pick the side against the one you feel pressured by, I think and then globalise the opposition.  They've done that so far in my view.  Everyone is, as far as they make out, pressuring women to be perfect moms, but if their review of Eberstadt is anything to go by, they are seriously misreading a lot of concern on the part of a lot of people about the state of our kids as guilt-mongering against mothers.  It just isn't so.  The thing is, kids are really demanding.  They need a lot -- and maybe a lot more than we wish they needed!  They're right in that we get not a lot of support for meeting those demands, but not right, in my view, for thinking we shouldn't be held accountable for meeting them.  I guess I was really kind of shocked by this book -- it seems really slanted and full of rhetoric without a lot of careful scholarship or analysis.
