Ideas for an assignment

Really brief summary: I'm supposed to go to a mall or other public place. And observe. And then write about it. It's more complicated than that, but that's the gist.

I can just sit there and watch and come up with a typology of people shopping or whatever, or I can do something like break a norm and observe how people react. (For example - prof says in the past she's had a male student go into a women's shoe store to buy heels for himself, for example, to observe how the salespeople and other shoppers reacted to him.)

I can't think of anything interesting. Any ideas? Only limits are that I can't let people catch on to what I'm doing, and I can't do anything that might harm people or make them uncomfortable or violate their privacy or whatever else, obviously.

I had a project like that when I lived in Montana. I climbed a tree in a public place, and ended up getting the cops called on me! But it made for an interesting report.

Hah! No way, that does sound interesting. She very clearly said though no getting arrested and no making headlines. And she wants to approve our choices beforehand to make sure there is no way either of those things could happen. Probably because of stories like yours! LMAO!

Well, I didn't actually get arrested or make headlines. So I think I followed the rules.

I had to do something like that for a sociology class. We were supposed to "drop" an id or something when people are looking and see if anyone tells you. Obviously don't want to do that with something that you would really hate to lose! I just used my gym id card. But it was somewhat interesting.

I've heard of people dropping money too, but I wouldn't do that, because a lot of people will pocket it.

Ohh, that reminds me! I took Writers Craft in high school and we did journals where we would go out and people watch. Someone in my class glued a toonie to a park bench and watched people try to get it off. He said it was hilarious! I should do something like that. Although I don't know if I could write 10 pages on it. And I don't know if the prof would be into it.

Yeah, it's supposed to be done like a miniature real field research/participant observation study. I'm starting to not look forward to this... Haven't decided what to do yet. Due in about a month, of course at the same time as another major assignment for the same class (a research proposal, involving a lit review and everything). This is the most advanced course I've taken and I'm finding it really intensive and intimidating. Blah.
