mirena iud, what to expect

Well thursday I am going to have the mirena inserted. I'm pretty excited and also nervous. I'm getting it because I have a really hard time remembering to take the pill and I definitely do not want to get pregnant right now! I'm mostly nervous because of all the side effects that I have heard and plus I hear it hurts to get put in. I have been reading stuff online, both good and bad but I was wondering if anyone had personal experience. Also, does anyone know if you or your partner can feel it when you are having vaginal sex? When I was on the nuvaring awhile back my bf who I'm still with now would always complain he could feel it.

It would leave poking marks on my partner. I've heard that it is usually only an issue with uncut guys.

My experience wasn't a good one with the Mirena. I lots of spotting, and pelvic pain for the entire year I had it in. I don't think that this is a typical reaction, thought.

The actual insertion, and removal did not really hurt. It was the same general discomfort of a pap test.

Re: mirena iud, what to expect

I've had a copper IUD, not Mirena though. Being honest I found the insertion pretty painful, but I didn't have it inserted during my period like I've heard recommended. Removal I found fine. I had bleeding and cramping on and off for the first couple of months, and heavier periods and cramps the whole time. Eventually I ran out of patience and I had it removed. But I've heard that Mirena is way better for bleeding and cramping than the copper one, because of the hormones - I've heard some women who have heavy periods and cramps actually prescribed Mirena to lighten their periods and help with the cramps.

DH never noticed it there during sex, and neither did I. He is circ'ed though. Interesting.

I have that right now, but I'm getting it taken out soon.
I can deal with my skin going to hell, being bloated 24/7, and spotting randomly. What I cannot deal with is how much it hurts during sex.:/
This is just my experience though. I know other girls who love it.

I bled the entire 4.5 months I had it in. I finally had it removed and later got the copper iud which recently expelled itself after about 6months.. apparently my body doesnt like iud's.

Re: mirena iud, what to expect

I had a copper IUD for about 6 months before it was expelled. My mom had the same thing happen, so perhaps there might be something genetic about that. It didn't hurt going in or out, and didn't affect my cycles at all.

Adcaela, my partner also complained about the poking, so much so that he wouldn't want to have intercourse. The cord left tiny prickmarks, and he was also intact. Interesting. I wonder if it is because the head of a circumsised penis is desensitized by clothing, friction, etc. that the pricking goes unnoticed.
