Submitted by mamatessa on Sat, 08/02/2008 - 2:53pm.

Well Kiara is almost 5 wks old now and has mild colic. Im bf'ing but she has the hiccups sooo much! Ive tried milicon (sp?), bouncing her while burping, and massaging her tummy. She cries so much and absolutely screams when she farts. Its breaking my heart to see her like that!!! Does anyone know of other remedies that work?

Oh and shes only had one bm since friday morning, and that was this morning. It was the normal seedy yellow poop. Do you think she could be constipated and if so what can I do to help . . . but if it was a normal bm. . . oh I dont know! This new to me, the boys didnt get it. I just feel so horrible seeing Kiara in so much pain and not knowing what to do to help her!! My poor baby!!!

So my mom told me that colic is severe gas that causes near constant crying. I googled it and thats not true. They dont know what exactly causes it. So let me clarify that she has EXTREME gas and is in incredible pain from it!

Awww poor baby! My son had that too I think...he used to cry so much and seem like he was in so pain and then he would poop and it would seriously be like an explosion of yellow that would go everywhere! And then he wouldnt go for days but he would cry so much and fart alot. The docs and midwives told me that its basically impossible for a breastfed baby to get constipated, they also said that the tiniest little bit of gas makes them really uncomfortable when they are so little. Its normal to go days on end without having BMs.
The things I used to do were
- laying him on his back and making his legs go in circles like riding a bicycle, to kind of pump the farts out (haha)
- lay him on his belly across my lap or arm, so that some pressure went on his belly
- Gripe Water. This isnt natural releif, but I resorted to it and it helped. It wasnt the kind with alcohol in it though, just the non-alcohol kind
I think part of it is waiting it out too, because usually gas -related colic doesnt last too long because soon their digestive tracts get big enough that a little bit of gas doesnt cause pain.

Think about what you're eating and restrict things that might be causing her problems. Like, onions, garlic, tomatos, caffeine, chocolate... I don't remember all of them.

I think restricting your diet might help too. I didn't eat broccoli, cabbage, caffeine, dairy products, beans, garlic, onions and more that I can't remember when I was nursing because I didn't want them to upset my baby's stomach. I bet you could find info on this online, but I think every baby is different and sensitive to different things. Try cutting out certain foods and seeing if she feels any better.

It's completely normal for bf babies to go up to 5 days without a bm. In a ff baby, that would be a sign of constipation. But in a bf baby, that probably isn't cause for concern.
Are you breastfeeding often for short periods of times, or less often for longer periods? The problem I had with K is I could only handle him eating from each side for about 5 minutes at a time (due to my sensory issues). He was only getting the fore milk that tends to make them more gassy. If you aren't already emptying one breast before switching/stopping, you might want to try that.
If you want a natural alternative to gripe water, I know my mom use to make something with an herb from her garden but I can't remember which one. It worked really well though. I can ask her what it was if you'd like.

I'm a bit late off the mark, but I see lots of previous good advice.
I have never had a colicky baby, but I did have two nights up with Nuala where she was gassy and screaming due to caffiene, and cucumbers....
I second evaluating the diet.
I can have a cup of tea in the morning, but I have to have decaf at night... no cucumbers at all.... I am also avoiding the things that bothered Aislynn.... turnips, brocolli, and apple products that have skins.... apple juice, cider, whole apples, etc.
Also, I have found a great gripe water...
It's all natural herbs, and baking soda...
WORKS FANTASTIC, but it's only good for 6 weeks, and has to be kept in the fridge.

Another great alternative is fennel or anise.
You can get the seeds in the herb section at a grocery store.... pour one cup of boiling water over a tablespoon of seeds. Steep for 15 minutes TOPS, strain, cool and give to baby.
If you drink it, the effects will pass through your breastmilk, so you may want to try that way as well.
Hope that helps!
